With an ebook reader, you can carry thousands of books at a time and access a library of millions more on a device that is smaller than a paperback, lasts for weeks on a single charge, and gives you a better reading experience than a tablet or phone. After testing every competitive ebook reader available in the US, we can say that the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite is the right choice for almost everyone.
The Kindle Paperwhite is light and small, with a side-lit screen that allows you to read in dim lighting. Amazon also offers the most impressive catalog in terms of scope and price, as well as partnerships that, for example, let you easily check out free books from many public libraries. This newest model is waterproof and includes Bluetooth so you can stream audiobooks, both nice extras.
The big difference is that the Kobo lacks Amazon's tightly integrated ecosystem, so you can't for example toggle between reading and listening to your books. It's waterproof, has physical controls and a 7-inch screen, as well as screen light color temperature adjustment for late-night reading. If you're looking for a bigger screen and a physical page-turn experience, the Kobo Libra H2O is the best option for a high-end e-reader.
It matches the features of more expensive Amazon options at a fraction of the price, with a comfortable design and durable construction. Over the past few years, the prices of ebook readers have fallen dramatically while the hardware has improved significantly, and high-end features including a backlit, high-resolution screen and waterproofing have become standard.
If you struggle with finding light to read, get frustrated with slow page turns or low resolutions, or merely hate how big your current ebook reader is, upgrading might be worthwhile. You can get a great reader that addresses all of those concerns for a fair price. This flexible arrangement can be great for times when you may not have your reader handy: You can read a few pages, and your progress syncs to the cloud so that you can pick up right where you left off on whichever device you prefer.
For regular reading, however, we think dedicated ebook readers are a better option for a number of reasons: nonreflective electronic-ink displays give you a more paperlike visual experience including enjoyable reading outdoors and less eyestrain than an LCD screenlighter weight, and a significantly longer battery life. In addition, DRM raises questions of ownership. This issue first came to light in when Amazon remotely deleted digital copies of certain George Orwell books from some Kindles.
Few companies ever made ebook readers, but these days the number has dwindled to just three serious competitors. You can find a few niche devices, such as those from Ectacobut nothing else comes in at a reasonable price with a library to back up the hardware.
You can comfortably navigate your collection, and find and purchase new titles and download them over Wi-Fi. You can also pay extra for a model with always-connected 3G wirelessa feature that none of the other e-reader makers offer.
The Kindle Paperwhite is now waterproof, for reading at the beach or in the bath, and also features Bluetooth for streaming audiobooks. It weighs 6.

Learn more. To a bookworm, there is no greater pleasure in life than diving into an enthralling book. Although many people still prefer good-old paperbacks, digital natives and people who travel a lot love their ebooks and ereaders. Ebook readers have come quite a long way since Amazon's first Kindle came out in They are now much faster and more compact.
Amazon still offers the widest range of ereaders, which includes everything from the humble Kindle to the Rolls-Royce of ereaders, the Kindle Oasis.
We've tested and researched the latest ereaders to find out which ones are best for all kinds of buyers. Whether you love page-turning buttons, enjoy reading in the bath, or just want a nice cheap ereader for travel, there's an ereader for you in our buying guide.
Note that all Kindles come in two versions: with special offers and without. If you choose the ones with special offers, you will see ads on the lock screen and potentially elsewhere, but you will save some cash upfront.
Amazon's Kindle has dominated the ereader world ever since the first Kindle arrived in I've always been a fan of paper books, and although I had dabbled in reading ebooks on my phone, I had never owned an ereader. That is, until I saw the first Kindle Oasis and fell head-over-heels in love with it.
Now, there's a third Oasisand it's even better than the first, thanks to a display that has adjustable color temperature. With the new display, you can limit the amount of blue light that filters through, which can help prevent eyestrain and sleep disruptions if you're reading at night. I love this feature and can really tell the difference when I read at night.
This is the ereader I use every day when I'm not testing new ones. Up until the Kindle Oasis arrived, all ereaders looked the same: small, rubbery, chunky little tablets with E-Ink screens and stores full of ebooks. The Oasis changed all that. Amazon's daring design removes the cheap, rubbery bezels around the screen and leaves you with a slick panel of glass and a sharp, crisp E-Ink screen. The new model is even thinner than the first Oasis, it's waterproof, and it has the adjustable color temperature display.
The asymmetrical design puts two page-turning buttons on the slightly thicker side of the ereader along with the battery. On the opposite side, the bezel is super thin, as is the ereader's body. The Oasis is incredibly light to hold, and the battery life is impressive. You can go weeks on a single charge. Beyond the design, the Oasis is a great ereader in every other way.
Library books are also very easy to download once you've linked your library card to the Kindle. You can get either 8GB or 32GB of storage, depending on how big your library is. You can also pair the ereader with Bluetooth headphones to listen to audiobooks with Audible.Find more solutions.

Get free delivery with Amazon Prime. It used to be easier to justify the premium, as it was the only waterproof Kindle available, but the latest Paperwhite sports water protection as well. That means the Kindle Oasis needs a new trick, and it comes in the form of a more advanced backlight that lets you tweak how cool or warm it is, which can help reduce eye strain. Most people will be best off saving money on our Editors' Choice, the Paperwhite, but depending on how much reading you do and how good your eyes arethe Oasis might be the right Kindle for you.
The Oasis is available in a variety of choices in both capacity and connectivity. There are two capacities 8GB and 32GBtwo network versions Wi-Fi-only and Wi-Fi with cellularand a choice of whether or not you want Amazon's "special offers," which are Amazon-driven ads displayed on the reader's sleep screen.
It's a flat, tablet-like device that measures 6. The Oasis is available in champagne gold or graphite versions, dictating the finish of the aluminum back panel. Both colors feature an opposite face with a flush black border that frames the screen by a quarter of an inch on three sides and a full inch on the fourth side.
Amazon Kindle Oasis User Manual
The wider border holds two rubber buttons for turning pages. This part of the reader is also where a third of the back thickens out to 0.
The reader is almost perfectly vertically symmetrical, for ambidextrous use. You can hold the Oasis by the grip in your left or right hand, and the screen will automatically rotate. One edge of the reader holds a micro USB port for charging and the other edge holds a power button, but these are the only asymmetrical aspects of the design. So you can take it to the beach, the pool, and even into the shower without worry. Of course, moisture can make touch screens perform awkwardly, so you might want to stick to the page-turning buttons when reading in the water, which is an advantage over the button-free Paperwhite.
The display remains a 7-inch, ppi E Ink panel with a level grayscale just like on the previous model.
Despite this, this screen can be much easier on your eyes thanks to the addition of an "adjustable warm light. A warmth slider, located under the brightness slider on the Oasis' pull-down menu, adjusts the color temperature of the screen. At the lowest setting it's a cool blue-gray, while at the highest setting it's a warm yellow-orange.
The cooler light can appear brighter and make the screen stand out in certain lighting situations, but it also tends to be harsher on the eyes, straining them this is a common effect with overhead fluorescent lights and computer monitors. Warmer light doesn't "look" as bright, but the reduced blue in the mix eases that strain, which is useful when you're staring directly at a device as your primary source of light. This adjustability isn't due to the E Ink panel itself, which is still purely monochrome.
This color-tweaking is performed by adjusting the Oasis' new 25 LED backlights. It has more than twice the LEDs as the previous model 12lighting the screen more uniformly while being able to shift from cool to warm color temperatures. You can even schedule the warmth to shift based on time or to match sunrise and sunset, making the screen warmer at night when you have less ambient light to read from.
The screen won't change at all if you read purely with ambient light and keep the backlight turned off, but if you want to read when it's dark, for instance, the ability to reduce blue light coming from the screen can be a real eye-saver.
I found the adjustments very soothing, and kept the warmth setting around 14 on the reader's scale. Everything else about the Oasis is unchanged from before.
The screen is sharp and easy to read even in bright sunlight thanks to its anti-glare coating. The touch controls are fairly responsive and make highlighting text and entering search terms easy. It's a sleek, slim, waterproof device that's comfortable to use.
Amazon Kindle Oasis (2019)
On the software side, the Kindle Oasis is unsurprisingly Amazon-centric. It's intended for reading ebooks purchased on Amazon or available by subscription through Kindle Unlimited or Prime Reading, and for listening to ebooks from Audible which is owned by Amazon.
If you already have a solid Kindle library or a subscription to Kindle Unlimited, you're golden. All of the usual Amazon features are available here, including GoodReads integration, X-Ray for following characters, and syncing your progress across multiple devices.
You can also highlight text, place bookmarks, and add notes. If your books are in EPUB or any other format, you'll have to use a converter. Once converted, you can send any unprotected ebook you want to the Oasis using a USB connection, or, for files under MB, just email them to the device using its dedicated Kindle email address which you can find in the Personal Document Settings section of the Manage Your Content and Devices page in your Amazon account.Quick Links.

To select an item, simply tap it. For example, tap a book cover or title to open the book, or tap the Menu icon on the item's cover to view available options. Back: Tap to retrace your steps.
For example, you can follow a link from a book, and then tap the Back icon to return to your place in the book.Much depends on what features you crave. Should you push the boat out and go for the top-of-the-line Kindle Oasis?
Or, should you save yourself some cash to buy more books and opt for the more affordable Kindle Paperwhite? Amazon has continued to refresh its range over the years, but the choice between its two top models is still a tough one to make.
Looking to grab yourself a Kindle? Check out our guide to the best Kindle deals available now. While the Oasis boasts a svelte aluminum body, with a thicker section at one side that houses physical turn page buttons, the Paperwhite is matte plastic, with chunkier bezels around the smaller screen and no physical turn page buttons. The Oasis comes in a choice of graphite or champagne gold, but the Paperwhite turns the tables with a selection of black, sage, plum, or twilight blue.
But the new Oasis has really shown its quality where the display is concerned. While the Oasis and Paperwhite both have sharp screens rated at pixels per inch, there are some important differences. For a start, the Oasis has a bigger 7-inch screen, while the Paperwhite has a 6-inch display. But, most importantly in our book, only the Oasis allows you to filter out blue light at night if you want to, making nighttime reading a more pleasurable experience.Geography meaning in latin history
While both devices use LEDs to light up the screen, the Oasis also boasts more LEDs than the Paperwhite, so it offers more lighting levels and better uniformity around the screen. Both devices support automatic brightness, but we found that it worked a lot better with the Oasis, whereas we often had to manually adjust the Paperwhite.
Side-by-side, the Kindle Oasis is a touch faster to turn pages and respond to touches a little faster, so it seems likely that it has a little extra processing power under the hood. However, it stands to reason the Oasis must have a bigger battery, since it has a bigger display to power.
However, the Oasis wins back some goodwill with it taking just two hours to fully charge from a 5W charger and around three hours from a computer USB port. The Paperwhite, on the other hand, took three hours and four hours, respectively, to do the same. However, with a touch more smoothness, the Oasis wins here. The software on the Kindle Oasis and Kindle Paperwhite is largely identical; there are just a few extra options with the Oasis.
That means both have features like Whispersync, which lets you keep your place across devices, and both come with optional ads on the lock screen, which lowers the price. We would expect software updates to be on the same schedule for both devices. Neither device has speakers or headphone ports, but both have Bluetooth capabilities that allow you to stream Audible audiobooks to a Bluetooth speaker or headphones.
There are also versions of both devices that include cellular service and Wi-Fi—just note that these versions are more expensive and a little heftier. However, we recommend keeping watch for deals, particularly during Cyber Week Amazon Kindle devices tend to go on sale, which is a bonus. For these reasons, companies using traditional CDNs will reach their breaking point in 2015.
Google has been pushing for more online security, especially given all the breaches in 2014. The major search engine has also started using HTTPS as an SEO ranking signal.
Here are the main reasons why connections made over SSL will double again:Traditional CDNs that dominate market share focus on their biggest clients and pay little attention to the mid-market. Instead support tickets go hours or days without a response, only to be handed off to a less-than-knowledgeable staff or redirected to an outdated FAQ or unmoderated forum.
At MaxCDN, we have an average ticket response time of under five minutes and a Net Promoter Score above 80. Customers will continue to become more sophisticated, with multi-CDN strategies becoming more common. HTTPS will become the mainstream.Kindle Oasis PDF Review and Features Testing
With the speed benefits from SPDY and the latest security issues (Snowden) there will be a huge movement toward an HTTPS-only internet. Google already puts the pressure with SEO bonuses for HTTPS-enabled websites, and other companies like MaxCDN collaborate to provide free SSL. This means that all CDNs will need to adjust and embrace technologies such as SNI and SPDY, and at the same time reconsider charging extra for HTTPS requests.
This will push the Browser to become more of an operating system rather than Windows or Mac OS X. It is still years away, but I believe this initiative will encourage developers to write more software for the browser because it will have a near native feeling.
Content delivery networks will be a huge factor in this initiative. Assets will need to be as close to the last mile as possible to provide a native feeling. Progress bars that take over 2 seconds to load the content will be unacceptable to the UX.
